Why Are the Ants Still Here?: Understanding What Happens After a Professional Ant Treatment

We completely understand how frustrating it can be to still see ants after having your home professionally treated. Many people expect ant activity to stop almost immediately, so seeing workers continue to move through the home can make it feel like the treatment hasn't worked.

In reality, ants are one of the most challenging household pests to eliminate because the ants you see are usually only a very small percentage of the entire colony. Professional ant treatments are designed to eliminate the colony wherever possible, not simply the ants that are visible on the day of treatment. Depending on the species, the size of the infestation and the location of the nest, this process can take time.

You're Only Seeing the Workers

The ants you see walking through your kitchen, bathroom or around your home are almost always worker ants.

Their job is to search for food, water and shelter before returning these resources to the nest. The colony itself is usually hidden beneath soil, under concrete slabs, inside retaining walls, beneath pavers, within tree roots or even inside wall cavities.

What makes ants particularly difficult to control is that the visible workers often represent only a tiny fraction of the total infestation. Some colonies contain thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of ants, and many properties actually have multiple interconnected colonies or several completely separate nests operating at the same time.
This means that seeing only a small trail of ants inside your home doesn't necessarily indicate a small infestation.

Why We Don't Just Spray the Ants You See

It can be tempting to simply spray every visible ant, but this often provides only temporary relief.

Professional treatments aim to reach much deeper into the colony. Depending on the situation, your technician may use a combination of residual insecticides, professional ant baits, direct nest treatments and crack-and-crevice applications to target the infestation from multiple angles. Sometimes your technician may even need to try a hybrid of approaches to find the right fit for your ant problem.

The objective isn't simply to remove the visible workers, it's to eliminate the colony wherever possible.

Why You May See More Ants After Treatment

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"There are actually more ants now than before!"

While it can certainly be alarming, this is often a normal part of the treatment process. Professional ant baits are specifically designed to attract worker ants. Once they discover the bait, they collect it and carry it back to the colony, where it is shared throughout the nest. As more workers locate this new food source, you may temporarily notice an increase in visible ant activity. Although it may appear that the infestation is getting worse, this increased activity often indicates that the colony is actively feeding on the treatment and distributing it throughout the nest.

Did you know?

Some ant colonies contain: 10,000 workers

While others exceed: 300,000 workers

Why Does It Take Time?

Professional ant treatments are designed to work differently from supermarket sprays.

Rather than killing every worker immediately, they allow enough time for the treatment to be carried back into the colony before affecting the ants.

How long this takes depends on many factors, including:

  • The ant species

  • The size of the colony

  • Whether multiple colonies are present

  • The location of the nests

  • Weather conditions

  • Food availability

For smaller infestations, activity may reduce relatively quickly.

For larger infestations involving multiple nests, it may take several weeks, particularly severe infestations involving multiple established colonies may require several visits over an extended period to achieve the best possible long-term control. Dealing with Ants long term requires a commitment from yourself, and your pest technician, so make sure you find a pest company that has your back.

Why Some Infestations Need Multiple Treatments

Not every infestation can be resolved with a single visit.

Some colonies have been developing unnoticed for years before becoming visible inside the home. Others establish multiple nests across the property, making complete elimination much more complex and in some cases, complete elimination is not possible without more invasive approaches.

In these situations, the first treatment often begins reducing the existing colonies, while follow-up visits allow your technician to:

  • Assess how well the bait has been accepted.

  • Identify any remaining or newly active colonies.

  • Locate previously hidden nests.

  • Apply additional treatments where required.

For this reason, severe infestations frequently require ongoing management rather than a single treatment. This doesn't automatically mean the first treatment failed, it often reflects the size and complexity of the infestation itself.

Hidden Colonies and Re-infestation

Many properties have more than one ant colony. Even after one colony has been eliminated, neighbouring colonies may still be active, or new colonies may move into the area over time. Heavy rain, landscaping, seasonal changes and surrounding properties can all contribute to new ant activity. As each colony is eradicated, neighbouring colonies from adjoining properties may move into the area over time.

This is known as re-infestation, and it is different from treatment failure.

How You Can Help

To give your treatment the greatest chance of success:

  • Leave bait exactly where your technician placed it, unless they advise you otherwise.

  • Avoid using supermarket insect sprays on active ant trails unless advised by your technician, as this can interfere with the baiting process.

  • Keep food preparation areas clean.

  • Reduce standing water around the home where practical.

  • Let us know if you discover new heavy ant activity or locate a visible nest.

  • Work with us and remember, we are on your team.

When Should You Contact Us?

Please contact us if:

  • You continue to see significant ant trails after the expected treatment period.

  • Activity has not noticeably reduced over time.

  • You discover a large or previously hidden nest.

  • You have any concerns about your treatment.

We'll assess what's happening and determine whether the activity is part of the expected treatment process or whether additional management is required.
